Virtual Hebrew Conversation sessions begin this month

Temple Emanu-El and the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island are offering four levels of Hebrew Conversation in virtual sessions that begin in January.

The eight-session classes are suitable for those who want to learn spoken Hebrew, or learn more Hebrew, want to exercise their brains, or just want a fun, challenging evening.

Instructors include Israelis Amit Moshe Oren, community shaliach/emissary from Israel, and Ofir Segal, and veteran Hebrew teachers Janice Kaidan and Toby Liebowitz.

Segal writes, “For the past year and a half, I’ve been living here in the U.S. due to my husband’s work. After serving as a combat officer in an Iron Dome battery, I completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international relations.

“I have a rich background in coaching and mentoring, both from my experience as a chapter coordinator in the Israeli scouts and from being an educational instructor in different nonprofit organizations, as well as multiple volunteer projects that I have taken part in.

“Living far from Israel made me appreciate my culture, language, and my country even more, and I’m privileged to contribute my knowledge as an Israeli to the amazing Jewish-American community.”

Kaidan writes, “I have been teaching Hebrew for over two and a half decades, both in the classroom and privately. I am fascinated by the language and thoroughly enjoy sharing its singular qualities with others.”

All classes are available on Zoom. As of late December, the beginners and intermediate classes were scheduled to be available in-person at the Dwares Jewish Community Center in Providence.

The advanced beginners and intermediate groups meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following Mondays: Jan. 10, 24, 31, Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, and March 7.

The beginners and advanced groups meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: Jan. 11, 25, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, and March 1, 8.

The cost is $100 for every eight sessions. Some financial aid is available. Links to the Zoom will be forwarded after registration.
