PAWTUCKET, R.I.James R. “Jim” Engel passed away May 24 at his home in Pawtucket. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, the son of the late Dr. Herbert W. and Barbara (Stein) Engel Swartzberg he was a resident of Oakhurst, New Jersey, before relocating to High Point, North Carolina, and eventually settling in Rhode Island.

 Jim attended Brookdale Community College and earned a certification in food service. A dedicated employee, he worked for the Alcohol Beverage Control of North Carolina in High Point for 23 years and worked for Brown University’s dining services for nine years. A New England sports enthusiast, he enjoyed traveling with his family to Cancun and Punta Cana and spending his summers in Narragansett. He adored taking care of his sister and brother-in-law’s dog, Max, but especially the time he spent with his nieces and nephews.

Jim is survived by one brother, Peter Engel and his wife Helen of Livingston, New Jersey, and Arlington Vermont; one sister, Cathy Oresman and her husband Bob of Pawtucket and nieces and nephews, Harris Engel, Morgan Engel, Daniel Oresman and David Oresman and his fiancée Abby Ricci. He was the stepson of the late Fred Swartzberg.
